avis with her kits

Dear Friends,

Born and raised in China, I inherited from my father a view of the world as a fascinating place to explore.

During my college years I got acquainted with America, then made my way east again and taught for three years at the College for Women in Beirut, Lebanon.

While teaching in Beirut I explored the various countries around the Eastern Mediterranean and their wonderful diversity of religions. From there I eagerly went on to Indonesia and spent a summer at my parents' new home.

Between my own travels and those of my friends, I have collected an abundance of artifacts from these parts of the world.

Doing what I love most –
teaching, creating, and sharing.

Years later, when my daughter was in elementary school, forced busing began. The mothers at the school started a "hobby room" where we could get to know each other better. Together we taught the children crafts — and learned many new ones ourselves. The "hobby room" was very popular.

Then, a number of years ago the United Nations Association started a Saturday program of folk tales from around the world. For three years I created a craft for each folk tale — and children were invited to make one for themselves. I eventually discovered that preparing kits in advance of the program helped everything to run more smoothly.

This was the beginning of CRAFT• KITS...and now that we are marketing these affordable kits to teachers and families, with each new design I relive some of the excitement of those years of travel — and the pride of creation in those children's faces.

I am pleased to share some of my (and those of my friends') ideas and discoveries with you and welcome you to try CRAFT• KITS with your families. I hope that they contain as much adventure and fun for you and yours!

Sincerely,
Avis Schmul
